Duvet Cover Sets and Types of Duvet Filling - Choosing the Best One

If you are planning to buy a duvet and duvet cover set, you have to know how to do it properly. After all, these are things that you will use when you are sleeping. And you want to be 100 % comfortable when you are in snooze land. There are several tips or choosing the right duvet cover set. Here are some useful tips.

Organic Wool Duvet

Choose something that has a high thread count or TC. A high TC means softer duvet cover. A duvet cover set with a 300 TC is perfect. But if you still want something softer, you can still choose something with a higher TC.

Organic Wool Duvet

Decide on the fabric. Duvet covers can be made of several types of fabric: cotton, velvet, faux, suede, silk, etc. Cotton is the best option if you want something soft and comfortable. But if you want something that will keep you really warm in winter, velvet is a good choice.

Select the right style, pattern, or color. This depends on your bedroom's existing theme. Choose something that will match or complement what you already have.

Size is also important. Choose a duvet cover set with the right size, depending on the down comforter or duvet that you will cover.

These are the things that you should consider when choosing a duvet cover set. What about the duvet filling? It is equally important to choose the right kind of filling which works best for you. Here is a list of the different types of duvet filling.

Down. This is the plumage that grows underneath a duck or a goose's outer feathers. It is very fluffy and soft. It protects the birds from the cold harsh weather in winter. Goose down is more expensive than duck down because goose is rarer, unlike duck which are readily available in different parts of Asia.

Down and Feather. A combination of down and feather is cheaper than pure down. Pure down makes you really warm in winter while down and feather mix is perfect for summer or not-so-cold months.

Wool. This is another type of duvet filling that is natural. A wool-filled duvet will keep you warm during cold months and cool during hot seasons. Most of the time, a heavy wool-filled duvet is warmer than a light duvet.

Synthetic. These are made of polyester fabric and they are probably the cheapest in the market. They are not as comfortable as other types of duvet filling because it will not mold round your body when you lie down on it. A more expensive type of synthetic filling is microfiber. It feels like a down duvet but the similarities end there.

Cotton. This is popular in warm countries where people do not need heavy comforters in cold season. The price is similar to that of wool-filled duvets.

You have to consider these things when choosing a duvet and duvet cover for your bed. It is important to choose the best one if you want to be comfortable while sleeping.

How to Dry Clean at Home

Many people opt to dry clean at home because they cannot afford to pay others to dry clean their delicate clothes, or because they do not trust others to do it properly. But when you opt to do it at home, you need to understand the process so as to get the best results.

Organic Wool Duvet

The first step is to always look for the label on the article of clothing to be cleaned, and look for the care instructions emblazoned on the label. You need to find the words "Dry Clean Only" on this label. This means that the clothes cannot be dumped inside a regular washing machine and washed with detergent and water.

Organic Wool Duvet

Why is it important to dry clean such clothes? Well, if you don't, you may wind up doing irreparable damage to the fabric. Examples of fabrics that require these methods are silk, rayon, and wool blends. The damage these would suffer when cleaned the wrong way are shrinking, bleeding of colors, and warping of their shape.

The process requires the use of a chemical solvent (known to most people as "dry cleaning fluid".) The most common chemical solvent required is perchlorethylene (otherwise known as "perc".) Experience has shown that this solvent is quite effective at removing grease-based and oil-based stains from clothes. However, you have to be cautious when using the solvent because inhaling its fumes can make you very sick. This is also why it is quite important that all the perc be removed from the clothing after cleaning because some people find even trace amounts of perc to be quite irritating to the throat, nose, and eyes.

If you opt for dry cleaning your own clothes, there are some home kits available to the public. These kits do the same job that commercial shops do, but their ingredients may be different from the solvents used by commercial dry cleaners. Generally, the home dry cleaning kits contain a reusable dryer bag, dryer activated cloth, and the stain remover. Others may also include pads that absorb stains.

Before you can dry clean, you need to pre-treat the clothing fabric with the stain remover. The stain remover is often water-based so any stains that are water-based (such as soup) are easily removed. There may be some detergent and/or petroleum ingredients in this stain remover as well. Though it may seem funny to use a water-based solution for pre-treating clothes, there is only a small amount of water so it won't damage your clothes.

Solvent will be necessary if the stains on your clothes cover quite a large area. But apply only a small amount of solvent on a hidden part of your clothing first - this will show whether the fabric is durable enough to withstand the use of solvent. Then you can go about the dry clean process indicated on the box of your home kit. Bear in mind you may need to own a dryer if you opt to dry clean at home.

Moth Proof Storage Bags for All Your Fine Garments

All your fine garments can now be protected, with a set of moth proof storage bags. Many sizes allow you to choose one that is right for each piece, while keeping out the harmful pests and protecting your clothes from other types of damage as well. They are a much better option than the alternative, which is to use those smelly balls that can be toxic to pets and children.

Organic Wool Duvet

Using these products is a better idea than using the balls, because you will rid you closet of the nauseating smell. In addition, your garments will have protection even when they are moved from one location to another. This includes traveling as well. Whether you are staying with relatives or in a hotel, you may not be able to see the tiny pests that often chew golf ball size holes in garments. The larva are the ones that do the damage, not the adults, which are usually visually seen. They seem to especially like wool and heavier woven fabrics, which are often used in suits and better garments.

Organic Wool Duvet

Using these products can protect your clothing from other types of destruction. In some climates, moisture can be a problem that leads to mold or mildew. With a tightly closed bag, there will be no worry about musty odors or mildew stains. In addition, you will keep your fine garments free of dust and debris that might come about with frequent travel. Many products are designed to fold, for the purpose of traveling.

Products are made of a polyvinyl material, which is very thick. Most products contain a natural substance that keeps pests away. Products can be found in a variety of online stores and in many retailers that carry home storage and fabric care items. Prices are reasonable. You can typically find a single protector for long evening gowns or a set to use with your favorite suits and sweaters, for or less.

Making Your Own Down Comforter

As its name, down comforter is something that will give you the comfort that you need in cold weather. This is a breathable and soft insulator for your body that will keep you warmth and comfort. You will find that this can be used for years.

Organic Wool Duvet

You can make your own down comforter with basic sewing skills that you have. You will find that this is a great way to save your money since you do not have to buy highly cost down comforter in the market. The following steps will show you on how to make down comforter by your own.

Organic Wool Duvet

First step
You should buy two sheets of fabric with the size of bed that you have in your house. In this matter, you should choose the patterns and the colors that suit the décor of the room. You can buy two different patterns to make the comforter that you will make reversible. After you get them, pin them together with the right side so that you will create a large bag. Make sure that the bag is inside out.

Second step
You should stitch the four sides of the bag together. But, you should leave 8-inch gap in one of the sides. Then, since the bag position is inside out, you should turn it back to the right position. You should do it gently by pushing the fabric trough the 8-inch gap that you left.

Third step
You should stuff the down into the sack that you have made. For this, you can use duck or goose down. Make sure that you use enough down to make a certain thick of comforter that you want. After the down is stuffed, you should close the opening gap by sewing it.

Fourth step
You should lay the comforter that you have made on a flat large surface. You should distribute the down inside the comforter. After it is distributed well, you should sew the comforter lengthwise and crosswise so that it will create squares 12 inches on each side. Now, you will have the comforter that you can use every time you need it.

What's in Your Baby Mattress? Part 1

Do you know what's in your mattress? The conventional mattress is made up of metal inner springs, rubber/latex, cotton and wools and chemicals - oh those good ole chemicals that we sleep with ½ of our life and if you are a baby, 75% of the first 2 years of your life is spent sleeping or playing on a toxic mattress and inhaling the air from no more than inch or two above the source. Would you put yourself or your baby in a room of chemicals that they touch and breathe 24/7?

Organic Wool Duvet

We as a society are in an epidemic of environmentally mediated diseases among our children today as the rates of asthma, allergy, childhood cancers, birth defects and developmental disorders have exponentially increased. Children up to six years old are at the most risk for chemical toxicity as their vital organs and immune systems are still developing and they depend heavily on their environment, much more than adults do.

Organic Wool Duvet

The problems with baby mattresses within the last 3 decades is that the materials have been replaced with cheap petroleum - based synthetic products and some of these chemicals have been shown to leach out into the surrounding air. What are these chemicals and what are they doing to our children?

There are 5 basic problem/chemicals in conventional baby mattresses and the #1 is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or vinyl. This chemical is used as the surface material in nearly all conventional baby mattresses and is considered one of the most toxic and environmentally unfriendly plastics in use today. This chemical makes the vinyl surface of the typical baby mattress soft and flexible and phthalate plasticizers are added (most often DEHP). Phthalates account for 30% by weight of the vinyl surface of a typical baby mattress. What are phthalates? They are chemicals added to PVC to make the plastic soft and flexible and then as the product ages the vinyl cracks, becomes brittle and the phthalates leach out. These chemicals are absorbed into the bodies of babies and are very harmful and are found within one inch of your baby 10 or more hours a day. They are not found in just baby mattresses but also our lotions, shampoos and almost anything that is or contains plastic. Not only does your baby put these plastic items in her mouth (baby bottles, pacifiers, teething rings, etc) but they absorb the phthalates thru the skin as they are in lotions and shampoos and then they sleep on a conventional baby mattress. This is evidenced by the increased phthalate levels found in breast milk and household dust samples.

Over the last couple decades there has been increasing numbers of asthma, allergies, malformations, liver damage, male reproductive damage and other health problems. It use to be that these problems only occurred in about 1 or every 5000 children, today it is 1 in a 100 or for example, asthma is reported in1 of 20 children.

Problem # 2 is that not all plastics are created equal. PVC is made from vinyl chloride which is a combination of petroleum (ethylene) and chlorine and is much more toxic than the plastic bag you put your daily lunch in. Then there are added chemicals to the PVC surface which can include lead, cadmium, phosphorus and others. Antimony is a very rare element and not commonly found in water supplies or foods except in parts of the world with volcanic activity. It is not considered an essential element for life and is considered dangerous and occupational exposures may become life threatening. The chemical properties are much the same as lead. It is has been added as the primary fire retardant used on vinyl plastic surface and is very harmful even at low levels. It can cause eye irritation, hair loss, hung damage, hearth problems, and fertility problems Arsenic and its compounds are added to baby mattresses to combat growth of microorganism growth as mildew. It has been shown over the last couple centuries this element doesn't work, yet manufacturers are still putting arsenic into our baby beds.

These are just 2 of the 5 main problems with conventional baby mattresses and yet babies are put to sleep daily in chemical laden beds and expected to grow healthy and strong. Today, children are exposed to thousands of substances in the environment, most which haven't been tested for toxicity to children... The implications of this massive exposure are unknown.

What can you as a parent do to reduce or prevent your child's exposure to these dangerous chemicals? The first and most important thing is to have an organic mattress. These beds are made from 100% natural rubber, organic cotton and organic wools. They contain no phthalates, vinyl, and polyurethane foam, chemicals or scrap/ pig hair fibers. The cotton and wool are raised organically thus no chemicals used in production or manufacturing of the products. Your baby will sleep better and if they have health problems as asthma or allergies they may be reduced or even eliminated. Your chance of SIDS is reduced and health issues of the future are reduced.

How to Dress Up a Pair of Simple Black Boots

Forget about diamonds… Black boots are every girl's best friend! Whether dressy or casual, flat or heeled, ankle length or tall, black boots can take an outfit and turn it from blasé to chic.

Organic Wool Duvet

Black boots have long been a staple of women's wardrobes. They can be matched to almost any colour outfit, from bright to earth tones and make a smashing fashion statement.

Organic Wool Duvet

Here are some things you can pair with different types of black boots to dress up any look you're aiming for:

Coloured cigarette pants.
Skinny jeans and cigarette pants look amazingly great tucked into a great pair of black boots. Try a bright coloured pair, something in a great red or hot pink, and make your ensemble really pop. They look great with stiletto, flat riding or chunky heeled boots. Make sure the pants or jeans are the correct length and tapered tightly around the ankle to avoid bunching over the top of the boots.

Brightly coloured or patterned knee high socks
One of the more cute, casual looks is to add a pair of hot socks that will peek out over the boots. For example, argyle socks look adorable when paired with black riding boots or even cowboy boots. It adds a unique flair and a brightly coloured pattern draws attention not only to your apparel, but will accentuate your boots. Fair Isle chunky wool patterned socks also work well with this look, and if you want to take it up a notch, you can put on a pair of over the knee socks with a skirt or casual dress. The long length between the socks and the boots make a great contrast to your getup.

Leggings
Every woman needs a great pair of leggings, which can be thrown on in seconds and are comfortable and cosy in the colder months. Add a hot pair of black stiletto boots and a funky patterned tunic top, and voila! A casual but sophisticated look is born. You can also go for combining leggings, in whatever colour or pattern you fancy, with classic tall black riding boots. Add an oversized sweater and you've got a fashionable look that translates to any occasion.

Leg Warmers
This last look is not for everybody. It's a fashion risk of sorts, and only the truly daring can pull it off with no problem whatsoever. Pull on a pair of funky patterned or suitably coloured leg warmers over a pair of black, casual boots for a unique, trendy style that will definitely get you noticed. This combination is best with flat or low heeled boots, as it can look a bit bizarre with high heeled or stiletto boots. It is an adorable combination when done right, and conveys a great sense of style to others.

Whether you want to stand out or just feel great about your sense of style, a gorgeous pair of black boots can be accessorised with an array of apparel. Just find what feels comfortable for you and the look will translate naturally.

Metal Headboards Queen

Duvet Inserts - King Size

When you shop for bedding the first thing you need to determine is the size of the bedding you will need to fit your mattress. Sizes can range from twin, single, queen, kind and California king. It is highly recommended that you purchase bedding that is the correct size. One of the most popular sizes of duvet inserts in king. A king bed is one of the largest size and one of the most expensive. The only size larger than a king is the California king. A large comforter may be more comfortable to some people, but, don't forget that a more expensive price tag comes along with a king insert.

Organic Wool Duvet

Bedding pricing is heavy effected by the size, the larger size the more expensive it typically cost.  The bed sheets, duvet cover, duvet insert, comfortable, and flat sheet will all cost more. But, don't let price stop you from experiencing comfort, as long as you can afford it. If you spend the money on good quality bedding it will last you years and give you the most out of your money.

Organic Wool Duvet

King duvet inserts come in many different styles, colors and brands. We still believe Hotel collection is one of the best brands you can purchase but other brands like Westin and Natural Comfort will provide a high quality insert. The duvet insert is portion of your comforter than gives the fluff; it is the stuffing.

You have options of going with a down duvet insert, alternative down, cotton, and you can even choose different materials. The materials can range from Egyptian cotton all the way to sateen. The weight of duvet inserts are the different levels of stuffing, for lack of a better word. King inserts have thin weight, medium fill, and heavy fill. The thicker the fill the warmer and fluffy your comforter will become. They are also rated by fill power, which is a rating to the level of fill in your duvet insert. The most common ranges from a fill power 300 to a fill power of 600.

Some features to look for in your king insert is the ability to avoid lumping and shifting of the fill. This way your fill, whether it's down, cotton or a down alternative, will be evenly distributed throughout the entire blanket.

How to Buy a Bed

Beds - The How To Buyer's guide

Organic Wool Duvet

Sleep is essential for well-being - and a comfortable bed is vital for a good night's sleep.

Organic Wool Duvet

However, we don't always realise when our bed needs replacing. Specialists advise that a good-quality mattress should last for 8 to 10 years, but there are a few obvious signs of wear and tear such as protruding springs and, for couples, the tendency for the mattress to sag in the middle.

If you find you sleep better in a bed other than your own, it might be time to buy a new one.

Before you buy a new bed
One major consideration is size - of both your bedroom and yourself. To judge a bed's optimum width, both partners should be able to lie side by side, with their hands behind their heads and elbows sticking out without touching. A bed should also be at least 10cm longer than the taller partner.

When shopping for a bed, couples should try a range of mattresses, with divans and bedsteads, to find the combination that best suits them.

Some research has shown that people who have back pain actually have a worse night's sleep on mattresses that are marketed as 'orthopaedic'. But irrespective of back problems, a heavy person will always need a firmer bed.

Always visit a reputable bed shop and, when testing the mattresses, remember that comfort is all-important. Lie in your favoured sleeping position for long enough to make a considered judgment. Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council cautions wisely, "Never go shopping for a bed when you're tired, as any mattress is likely to make a favourable impression."

The Bed Base
What the mattress rests on will affect your bed's comfort, so it is best to choose a mattress and base that are designed to go together. Both components should be of equal quality, too, or comfort will be compromised.

A divan base is a box frame on castors or legs. More responsive than a solid top is a firm-edge divan with heavy springs set inside a wooden framework. For the best level of support, look at sprung-edge divans, which have one or more complete spring units on top of the wooden frame. A divan with a deep base can also include storage drawers, while ottoman-style divans open on hydraulic springs to reveal a storage compartment inside.

The other main base option is a bedstead, which supports the mattress on flat slats or on more responsive sprung slats. Solid bases or slats are a good choice for memory foam or mixed foam/spring mattresses. If a bedstead comes with the option of an upholstered base unit, this will be far preferable under a pocket-sprung mattress and will offer similar comfort and support to a sprung-edge divan.

Choosing a bed stead
Choosing a bedstead or four-poster bed over a divan is a matter of style, as both allow the same mattress choice and can provide equivalent support.

And So To Bed offers wooden, metal, painted, upholstered, leather and caned bedsteads; Simon Horn is known for traditional French styles; Feather & Black has a wide range of traditional and modern beds; and Beaudesert makes elegant four-posters. Bed Bazaar sells restored antique and period- style metal bedsteads, and its sister company, Sleeping Partners, makes mattresses to fit.

Specially designed beds
Some beds are designed for partners with widely differing body weights or comfort needs.

Zip-and-link beds comprise two mattresses of different firmness and can be separated into two single beds, if required.

Zoned mattresses also provide various firmness levels, either on each side, or along the length corresponding to pressure points. The Sleep to Live range by Bensons for Beds offers in-store computer body profiling to indicate which bed is most suitable; for partners with different profiles, the mattress is made with a dual sleep zone.

Offering greater flexibility, the Comfort Control pocket-sprung adjustable mattress from Feather & Black uses a remote-controlled air-pump system to make one side firmer or softer, as required.

Adjustable Beds
Electrically operated adjustable beds, such as the Restmaster from Rest-Assured and the Superb Adjustable from Sleepeezee, allow the occupant to adjust the mattress for maximum comfort. Models, such as the Restamatic from Vogue Beds, have massage units. Auping's Royal base with AVS Maestro mattress has five motors on each side, can heat the whole body or just the feet; it also airs and dries itself in the day and kills dust mites. The 160x200cm size costs around £14,000.

Adjustable double beds are linked so that each side can be operated independently; this type of bed may require investing in single sheets.

Mattresses
The most familiar of these are spring interior mattresses. Springs in heavier gauge wire give a firmer mattress; lighter gauge will give a softer mattress. The quality of the mattress is often determined by the number of its springs. Open coil and continuous spring versions are the least expensive and a budget mattress, unless made of foam, will be open coil.

Open coil mattresses contain rows of individual coiled springs joined with a helical wire. Continuous springs are made from one piece of wire and give a bit more independent support. For good, mid-priced continuous spring mattresses, try Miracoil by Silentnight.

Pocket springs are small individual springs sewn into calico sleeves. The pockets, rather than the springs, are joined, making the mattress more responsive to the sleeper. Also, when the bed is shared, the movement of one partner is less likely to disturb the other. The number of pocket springs in a mattress is one indicator of quality: a standard double mattress may have 600 to 800 springs or 3,000 or more. A larger number of smaller pocket springs or a double layer often features in mattresses from Savoir Beds and Vi-Spring.

Interior spring mattresses, whether open coil, pocket or continuous, are assembled similarly to a sandwich with the supporting springs between layers of cushioning on each side. The cushioning provides a barrier between the springs and the occupant. Fillings can range from inexpensive polyester to combinations of cotton, wool, horsehair, silk, mohair and cashmere, as well as better quality foams, including latex or visco-elastic foam.

Deeper mattresses will have more fillings, offer greater comfort and be more expensive. Hand-stitched sides, found mainly on handmade beds, extend the sleeping area to the edge. Not all mattresses need to be turned over, but all should be rotated regularly so that the head end becomes the foot end.

The finest handmade mattresses, such as those by Hästens Savoir Beds and Vi-Spring are constructed only from natural materials. They combine wool, cashmere, mohair and horsehair as fillings because these particular fibres are resilient and wick moisture away for speedy evaporation.

Norris Bedding, which also crafts mattresses by hand in natural materials, offers a pocket spring mattress, at 150cm wide, for £1,320. Welsh company Vi-Spring creates handmade pocket spring, natural latex and combination latex/pocket spring mattresses using certified organic materials.

Polyurethane foam mattresses range from the inexpensive, which can be found at Ikea, through to high-specification options, such as Reflex foam as used by Cumberland Bedding Co. Beds 4 Zzzz is just one company that makes mattresses in natural latex derived from the rubber tree.

Latex has a long-standing reputation as an excellent material for mattresses because it is resilient and recovers its shape quickly. Dunlopillo has always been the leading supplier of latex mattresses and these now blend natural with synthetic latex. A latex mattress doesn't need turning and is naturally anti-allergenic.

Visco-elastic foam, also known as memory foam, is currently enjoying popularity. This synthetic material quickly conforms to the sleeper's shape so that hips and shoulders sink in, but support is maintained under the spine, keeping it correctly aligned. Dispersing the body weight away from the pressure points is its particular benefit. One of the side effects of visco-elastic foam is that it holds body heat, making the bed very warm. Sleepers usually find they need a lower tog duvet or less bedding, but body temperature can be regulated by choosing a mattress from a company such as Breasley, that has a cover which employs Coolmax technology.

Memory foam is expensive to produce and the price of a mattress will reflect the thickness and density of the foam - it should range from 50 to 70mm in thickness - and its combination with either another type of foam or a sprung unit; if the mattress was made entirely from memory foam, the sleeper would keep sinking. Most companies include memory foam mattresses in their collections; Healthbeds' Memory-Flex 20 (£699 for a 150cm-wide mattress) and Memory-Med 1400 (£749 for a 150cm-wide mattress) both have 70mm-thick foam over Reflex foam and have performed well in trials. Find alternatives at Tempur, the Pocket Spring Bed Company, Beevers Beds and Relyon.

Water-filled mattresses give pressure-free support, too, and are a further alternative for allergy sufferers. Guidance on the benefits and unusual qualities of these mattresses can be found at the British Waterbed Association.

The History Of Fabrics

From the early years on, men and women have dressed with dignity. Women wore long "tunics" that covered pretty much everything and covered their heads with veils starting in the time of Noah all the way through King David. This basic style did not change all that much for centuries. In the late 1500's, fashion became much more ornate though the basic clothing remained the same: long gown with long sleeves and a head covering of some sort. There was also lots of embroidery and decoration. It was also around this time that the corset was introduced. It wasn't long before it became the classic element of women's clothing. Around the time of the French Revolution, the trend of high-waisted dresses with straight, boyish silhouettes and flattened bust lines took hold. This is the style you see in Pride and Prejudge and Jane Austin. However, this fashion revolution didn't last all that long and fashion returned back to its traditional style. Here in the United States, waistlines were at the natural spot and the styles were fancy. Men wore ruffled shirts, tight knee-breeches, and powdered wigs. In the mid-1800's, skirts started becoming very full with hoops and crinoline petticoats. You often see this style in photographs taken during the Civil War. The bustling at the back of the dress started around this time also.

Modern fashion started taking shape around the 1900's. The hemlines moved above the ankle and fashion became simpler. It is interesting to note that the women's clothing trends of the day follow the same pattern as the trends in society. The Industrial Revolution (around 1800) enabled women to work outside the home which changed the way the dressed. In 1920, women were given the right to vote and this is where we first saw the departure from the classic style of dress! In the roaring 1920's, you saw women with short hair with skirts raised to the knees and sleeveless bodices. Coco Chanel (Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel) was the driving force behind these drastic changes. Around the same time, designers Yves Saint-Laurent and Courreges introduced dressy pantsuits for women. During World War II, women were often working in factories. They wore trousers and coveralls to work but kept their feminine style of dress for home. After the war, the men came home to white-collar suits of the middle class or blue-collar uniforms of the working class. Women were expected to wear makeup and pretty dresses. In the 1960s, young people started to question society and its prim and proper dress. You would often see women with long hair, no makeup, and barefoot. Men also grew their hair long, grew beards, and wore blue jeans. Music also inspired new styles. In the 1970s, you often saw men's pantsuits and women's metallic dresses and glitter.

Below is a timeline of some interesting points in the history of fabric:

6000 BC - During a geological dig, fine-spun and plied-thread, plain weave tabby cloths and garments were found dating back to this time period.

3300 BC - In the Similaun Glacier, the Ice Man was found wearing the gear of a Neolithic traveler. The Iceman's basic piece of clothing was an unlined fur robe stitched together from pieces of ibex, chamois, and deer skin. A woven grass cape and a furry cap provided additional protection from the cold, and he wore shoes made of leather and stuffed with grass.

490 BC - Quilting was known to the ancient Persians and, at the time of the Battle of Marathon (490 BC), quilted garments were worn as armor.

1130 - Skilled weavers who came to Palermo from Greece and Turkey produced elaborate fabrics of silk interlaced with gold.

1519 - Cotton is discovered in Central and South America by Pizarro and Cortez.

1631-1633 (roughly) - Calico is imported from Calicut, India by the East India Company

1708-1716 - A series of laws prohibiting the importation of printed silk textiles thus making calico's and silk textiles more popular than ever is signed into law by William III.

1858 - Englishman Charles Worth establishes first haute couture fashion house in Paris

1873 - Levi Strauss & Company receives their patent for blue jeans

1885-1889 - Rayon is invention in France and shown at the Paris Exposition of 1889.

1913 - Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel opens a boutique in Deauville, France. She revolutionizes and democratizes women's fashion with tailored suits, chain-belted jerseys, and quilted handbags. She's the most copied fashion designer in history.

1936 - Nylon is created by DuPont

1941 - The first polyester fiber called Terylene is produced.

1942 - Polyurethane (Spandex) is invented.

1947 - Christian Dior reestablishes Paris as a fashion center. He revives haute couture with tight waist, stiff petticoats, and billowing skirts.

1948 - Textiles become the second largest industry in the US. The consume consumption per capita of fibers 27 pounds of cotton, 6.3 pounds rayon, 4.9 pounds of wool.

1950 - The first commercial application for "Orlon" an acrylic wool substitute.

1955 - Velcro is created

1958 - Eastman Kodak introduces Kodel polyester.

1960 - London boutique owner Mary Quant champions the youth movement and introduces mini-skirt, hot pants. She also launched Twiggy as supermodel and becomes 1960s most influential 1960s designer.

1966 - Kevlar, which is 5 times stronger than steel, is invented.

1968 - Calvin Klein begins producing elegant, simple clothes, favoring neural earth tones and luxurious fabrics. Ralph Lauren creates men's wear line and expands into women's wear. He favors natural fabrics, and his designs feature western or country motifs.

1970s - A growing market for organically grown food was firmly established and the production of naturally grown fabrics soon followed suit..

1974 - Giorgio Armani creates a men's wear line and popularizes Italian tailoring

1984 - Donna Karan launches line of versatile, casual knits and favors the color black.

2004 - Bamboo fabric starts being manufactured in Asia, bamboo bedding and bamboo clothing start to make their way to the United States. Since then its popularity has grown by leaps and bounds.

Clothing has always played a role in our lives throughout history. The history of fashion is intertwined with every major development in American life since we got here in the early 17th century. However, now we are seeing fashion recycle and reinvent itself. Eco-friendly fabrics are part of this new century with hemp, organic cotton and bamboo being the front runners. The fashion industry is looking for ways to not only improve the design/style, but to be environmentally friendly. By going back to an earlier time and trying to be more natural, the fashion industry has quit trying to reinvent the wheel and instead giving the consumers what they want. It'll be interesting to see what the next ninety years will hold!
