What to Do If You're Allergic to Your Bed

Do you or your children regularly wake up with itchy, watering eyes and a runny or blocked nose? Do you sneeze when you shake out your pillows and bedclothes? If so, you could be suffering from an allergic reaction to your bedding.

Organic Wool Duvet

A number of factors can trigger allergic reactions, such as pets, or smoking in the bedroom. But one of the most common and yet invisible causes of bedding allergies is house dust mites.

Organic Wool Duvet

House dust mites and allergies

House dust mites are microscopic organisms that feed on human skin and can be found in everyone's home. They thrive in warm, humid places where there is plenty of food, so beds provide the ideal environment for them to live and breed in. Since we spend around a third of our time in bed, we breathe in vast quantities of these house dust mites. Most of us are blissfully unaware of their presence. Some people, however, can experience a hypersensitive reaction to proteins found in the excretion of these dust mites.Whenever you touch or shake your bedclothes, these proteins are inhaled or come into contact with your skin. If you suffer from a house dust mite allergy, your body will produce antibodies, which release a chemical called histamine.

This in turn leads to swelling and irritation of the upper respiratory passages, causing a range of symptoms:

Hay fever Runny nose Sneezing Watering eyes Asthma Worsening of existing eczema

The tendency to be allergic to house dust mites often runs in families. The good news is that there are several ways in which you can protect you and your family from these pests and ensure everyone gets a good night's sleep.

The best bedding to prevent house dust mite allergies

Allergies are often made worse by bedding made from or filled with natural materials, such as feathers and wool. Synthetic materials or high quality cotton (which is tightly woven so that dust mites can't get through the cloth) are best for allergy sufferers. Synthetic materials are easy to wash and dry regularly, which can help protect you from dust mites. Bedding should be washed at a temperature of at least 60°C to kill the dust mites. Another tip for removing dust mites from your bedding is to leave your duvet, pillows and mattress out in the fresh air for an hour every day, or for as often as possible depending on the weather. You can even wrap duvets and pillows in plastic bags and leave them in the freezer for 24 hours once a month to rid them of the dust mites. If you or your children have cushions, teddy bears, and other soft toys on your beds, these can act as dust traps, so make sure they are regularly washed and aired too. Finally, you may want to consider buying a cheap mattress so you can replace it for a new one after six months when the dust mites have infiltrated it.

House dust mites and your bedroom

Dust mites hate dry, cold air, so you can significantly reduce their numbers simply by letting fresh air into your bedroom every day. If the lower edge of your window is moist when you wake up in the morning, it suggests there is too much humidity in the air, which may be exacerbating your dust mite problem.

Don't use a spray to get rid of house dust mites, as these can worsen the symptoms of your allergy. Instead, have as little furniture as possible in the room. Wooden or plastic chairs are preferable, as there is no fabric or upholstery for the mites to live in. Reduce clutter in your room and don't leave anything lying around that gathers dust, such as dried flowers, books or old clothes.

If possible, buy plastic curtains and dust them every day. If you have rugs on the floor, wash them every week and clean your walls, woodwork and floor with a wet cloth. You can buy an allergen filter to fit on your vacuum cleaner, which you should use every day if you can, but at least twice a week. Wear a mask when cleaning to reduce your exposure to allergenic dust, and don't allow smoking in the house as this may worsen your symptoms.

Chemical allergies and organic bedding

House dust mites are not responsible for all bedding allergies. Some people are hypersensitive to the chemicals used to manufacture, treat and dye bedding and bed linen. If you suspect your allergy is caused by chemicals rather than dust mites, investing in a set of organic bedding could benefit your health. Organic bedding is made using natural farming and production methods and is not exposed to chemicals during the growing or manufacturing process. Organically manufactured textiles have less impact on the environment...which will help you sleep more easily too!

How to Identify the Different Varieties of Wood Grain Wall Paneling

In all my years of working as an interior decorator, I have never come across a subject that is so misunderstood as Wood Grain Wall Paneling. I'm here to set the record straight on this type of wall paneling. I will do my best to describe to you what is available in wood grain wall paneling. So join me as I walk you through what is being offered in the world of wood grain wall paneling. You will find out that you have a good variety of styles to choose from. After having given it some time and thought, I have put together some short definitions of the different types of wood grain wall paneling available today. This isn't your grandfather's wall paneling.

Organic Wool Duvet

Okay, so let's take a look at wood grain wall paneling. This is the type of paneling most people think of when the subject of wall paneling comes up. Wood grain paneling comes in a variety of colors and planking widths. Your wood grain choices are Beaded Birch, Frosted Maple, Beaded White, Honey Birch, Lite Birch, Westminster White, Provincial Pine, Paintable Deep Beaded, Oakdale, Fireside Cherry, Plain White Perforated Utility Panel and Oakdale Perforated Utility Panel.

Organic Wool Duvet

I will try to describe these wood grain wall panels to the best of my ability. The Beaded Birch has a medium brown stain with double-cut grooves cut down the length of the panel approximately 2 inches apart. The Frosted Maple is a grayish off-white stain. This panel also has double-cut grooves cut down the length of the panel approximately 2 inches apart.

The Beaded White is a white stain with double-cut grooves cut down the length of the panel approximately 2 inches apart. The Honey Birch is a medium-dark brown stain with single grooves running down the length of the panel alternating between 4 and 6 inches apart.

The Lite Birch is a lighter brown stain with single grooves running down the length of the panel alternating between 4 and 6 inches apart. The Westminster White is, of course, white stain. Westminster White panel is a smooth panel and has no grooves.

Next we have Provincial Pine. Provincial Pine is a light brown stain which has double-cut grooves cut down the length of the panel approximately 4 inches apart. Paintable Deep Beaded comes with a white stain. It has the look of typical bead board. This panel has double-cut grooves cut down the length of the panel approximately 2 inches apart.

Next we have Oakdale. Oakdale is a medium dark brown stain panel with double-cut grooves cut down the length of the panel approximately 4 inches apart. So now we are at Fireside Cherry. Fireside Cherry is a deep dark brown stain. This panel has a single black groove going down the length of the panel alternating between 4 and 6 inches apart.

The next 2 wood grain wall panels are perforated. These panels are called Utility Wall Panels. The holes on these panels serve a purpose. What you do is install these panels in your workshop or garage over the open studs of the wall, so there is an open space behind the perforated panel. There are all types of hooks and holders you can buy at your local hardware store that slide into these perforations. After you apply the hooks that you choose, you will be able to hang your tools, brooms, winter shovels, gardening tools and just about anything within a reasonable size and weight. There are a wide variety of shelves and small storage units that are made to hang on perforated utility panels.

The first of these 2 perforated panels is the Plain White Perforated Utility Panel. That pretty much says it all. This is a white stained 4' x 8' perforated wall panel. The second perforated utility panel is called the Oakdale Perforated wall panel. This 4' x 8' perforated utility wall panel is finished in a medium-dark oak finish. If you are looking for a beautiful wood finished utility panel to organize your tools and supplies, then this panel is for you.

So now you know what is available to you in regards to wood grain wall paneling. Wood grain wall paneling is only a small part of what is available in wall paneling in general. I will follow up in the near future with more information on other types of wall paneling. I hope this has helped you to understand what is available to you when it comes to wall paneling of the wood grain type.

The Home Decor Time Warp

One of the great benefits of my profession is that I get to visit all of my clients homes. Each client is as different as their home decor, so I get to see, first hand, what works and what doesn't. Trendy, transitional or just tired and tattered, my clients share their flooring needs with me and we choose the type, style and color that will best suit their decor needs. As I traverse from one home to another, I have noted a phenomenon of science fiction proportions. Upon entry into each home, I seem to be time-warped to another decade. Another plane in the time-space continuum. I enter one home to find that I should have worn my platform shoes, because I am suddenly stuck in the seventies and it's time to boogie. Upon entry to another home and I feel I need a pair of six-shooters strapped to my hips. Visit another home and I feel as though I should have grown a mullet to fit in with this eighties household. Another, and it's back to the future. Of course, this is normal because most people who have called for me want to update their home decor. My experience tells me that most homeowners update their decor to current trends, and then get stuck there for ten to twenty years or more. Then there are those homes that always seem to look stylish and exquisite no matter what the current trend is. These are homes that have people who follow basic and timeless home decor techniques that never go out of style. Trendy is fun for a few years, but timeless decor can last a lifetime. Let us see if we can pin down some of those techniques that will make a lasting impression in interior design and decor.

Organic Wool Duvet

The first element I will discuss is paint color choices. As an example; I have noticed that many people are painting all the walls in a room or rooms a red color. There's nothing wrong with red, but the colors most people are choosing are trendy colors of red. These colors will most likely be unfashionable in a few short years. I understand the look they are trying to achieve, but the color choice is simply not one that will stand the test of time. Bright or pastel colors are almost always a trend. Do you remember the salmon pink from the sixties and seventies Or how about the peach and mint green colors of the eighties southwestern rage. If you want to be trendy with red, I suggest using the same color group, but let's tone that down to a color that is somewhere around a muted hue of cinnamon or burgundy color. Now we have a color that doesn't jump out at you as you enter the room because it is a more subtle shade that gives warmth and presence to the walls without overwhelming the entire room. Color choice is a very personal element, but if you want to use bright yellow in your home decor, save it for accent items that you can change out easily when you tire of them or when they are no longer in style (nobody wants to enter a room where they feel like they have just penetrated the center of the sun). Use tones or hues of color that accomplish your goal without going "over the top". If you love the color purple, you can use it. Just use a very subtle hue that blends into the background.

Organic Wool Duvet

The next element would be window coverings. We have already discussed color so I won't go into it here. What we do need to consider is how popular your window treatment is now, and how it will look in three to five years. The generation preceding the present thought that mini-blinds were the best window treatment. Now we see that they have mostly fallen out of favor, with the exception of using them as if they were shades set behind another type of window covering such as draperies, or with valances and trimmed with other fabric coverings. Most roman style shades will stand the test of time. I see a lot of plantation shutters being used, and they are much better for long-term use (depending on the look you are shooting for in your decor). Fabrics (or draperies) are another home decor element that can be trendy or timeless, depending on the textures and patterns in fabric coverings. If you stick with what has always worked throughout the decades, you can be trendy and still expect long term usage. Stick with subtle fabric patterns. The use of a trendy patterns like brightly colored circles (polka-dots) may look good this year, but what about next year. You can use any pattern your heart desires as long as it is subdued and does not scream out "look at me"! Also, watch out for trendy fabrics such as those with a metallic sheen because texture is also a very important factor in home decor. For Example: Velvet is timeless, as is lace.

I suppose we should say a word or two on Texture. I am happy to see many people using stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops in their kitchens. These are textures that have a lasting effect on home decor. Although I'm afraid that most people don't realize the extra upkeep on granite or any real stone. These materials must be sealed well and periodically re-sealed to protect them. Real stone and some through body porcelain tiles are porous and require a sealer to protect them from spills that could leach into these textures. Glass is also a timeless texture for home decor. Brass and chrome seem to fade in and out of favor, but overall is generally safe. Watch out for exotic textures that are more on the trendy side.

As for flooring, the biggest mistakes people make are in the area of color and pattern. If people walk into your home and notice your flooring before they pay attention to your decor, you have probably made a bad color choice. You don't have to choose safe earth tones for flooring, but you do need to make certain that your color selection blends into the background and not the forefront of your interior design. There are also different textures in flooring. Choose a texture that will last. During the time period when southwestern decor was all the rage, many people chose patterned Berber carpet for their floors. When trends changed, many people were having a hard time decorating around a floor that they no longer cared for because it was not stylish. Plush carpets are always safer for home decor and do not tend to go in and out of style. Hard-surface floorings should always have a natural look. Because hard-surface lasts a long time and is a greater investment, be careful about color and composition. You may have to live with a bad floor choice for many years. One terrific tool for flooring is the Area Rug. They are extremely versatile and if you stay to classic patterns, they will serve you for a long time. I always suggest the use of wool area rugs for their durability, stain resistance, and most oriental or middle eastern patterns always make a good appearance, without dependence on current styles and trends. Area rugs can be used to define space and for color accent or background color utilizing larger rugs. They are a good, timeless tool for home decor.

I am not saying that you can't be trendy or up to date with your interior design. I am not saying you have to get stuck with traditional design. Simply use more subtle colors, textures and patterns to establish the background for your decor, and use accent pieces and furnishings that can be easily and economically swapped out when they are no longer "the rage". If you stick with techniques that have always worked in the past, you preserve your home decor for the future. It can be fun For Me to zip around in time and space, but it's no fun for you as a homeowner or tenant, if your decor is stuck in the past. Don't let your home decor get trapped in a time warp.

Area Rug Savvy - Choosing the Perfect Rug For Your Living Room

An area rug adds a crucial level of style to a room. Even if you like sleek modern style with dark wood floors, an area rug will add warmth, color and design to your living room. Use it to define a conversation area and pull all the colors of your room together. You can use an area rug over neutral carpet to add more color and style to a room; this can help 'cozy up' a larger carpeted living space. When choosing an area rug, consider size, style and color, and material to find that perfect combination of fashion and function for your living space.

Organic Wool Duvet

Rug Sizes and Shapes
Area rugs typically come in rectangular, round or oval shapes. In a living room where an area rug is typically used to anchor the seating area, rectangular and oval shapes will be the best choice for most situations. The sitting area will typically include a couch and loveseat, and/or side chairs gathered around the area rug. To keep the grouping of furniture in scale with the area rug, the area rug should be large enough to accommodate the entire coffee table or ottoman and it should extend the entire width and length of the couch. You can either have your seating pieces surround the edges of the rug, you can let the front feet of each piece of furniture sit on the rug, or you can choose a rug large enough to completely contain all the feet of your furniture. Typical rug sizes are 4x6, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12 and 11x14 feet.

Organic Wool Duvet

Choosing Style and Color
When deciding on a style and color of an area rug look to the color of your walls, furniture and other accessories as well as the patterns and designs of the room. If your room contains bold colors and multiple patterns, a solid rug colored rug can ground the space. On the other hand, if your furniture and accessories are more subdued, you can use a bold patterned rug to add a dose of color and design to the room. You'll find an incredible selection of styles, colors and designs at furniture, department and discount stores as well as online stores and catalogs. When shopping in stores you'll find that bringing along fabric samples of your furniture and wall colors can help you narrow your choices, even if you later translate those choices to catalogs and online sources.

Choose Material by Considering Lifestyle
Rugs are made from either natural fibers like wool and cotton, or synthetics such as nylon and polypropylene. Ease of care and your lifestyle should be top considerations when choosing a fabric. A retired couple with no children is likely to need a less stain resistant carpet than a family with children and pets. Popular eco-friendly materials include cotton, wool, jute and sisal. Wool is desirable for its durability, softness and easy care quality. Polypropylene is the most stain-resistant choice and nylon is extremely durable. Cotton is less durable and a good choice where foot traffic is at a minimum.

Anyone looking into getting a luxury wool blanket should know about the famous Merino wool blankets. There's a reason why this blanket is used all over the world in fine hotels, resorts and spas where people expect the best in their bedding. The Merino sheep that originated out of Australia have dense, long, luxurious wool. The length of their wool can be compared in a way to Egyptian cotton threads-the longer the fiber you start with, the softer, stronger and more luxurious your finished product will be.

Why wool is so prized-

Organic Wool Duvet

Its remarkable strength and softness give us feelings of safety and comfort. Wool gives us a personal environment that is health-enhancing because it's a natural fibre. Wool wicks moisture away from our skin, provides even warmth and body temperatures, resists fire and static electricity. It has the ability to shed off water.

Wool can absorb up to one-third of its own weight in vapor depending on relative humidity. Synthetic fibres can only absorb 2-3 per cent of moisture before they begin to feel damp. It's resistant to color changes and fading. It's buttery softness- no itching with the better wool blankets like Merino.

Warmth to weight ratio- light weight yet warm. Some of the most popular colors for Merino blankets: sand- blue- ivory- sage green- butter- white. Normally available in standard bed sizes from twin, full, queen and king.

This blanket can be found in 100% pure gorgeous Merino wool or blends with cotton, and in different textures and weaves. You're sure to find exactly the right blanket when you do your shopping online, where the world is at your fingertips.
